hey new to the forums.. im pretty sure calpy has hematoma on his ear. I reseacrhed it and it looks like it. I phoned the vet and they said it would cost me 50 bucks jsut to get him checked out, then it would cost whatever for him to drain whatever is inside of the blister (dont know what to call it)
anyway my question is how long does it take to go away by itself? im sure eventually the skin will absorb it or it will pop if he scratches at it (it doesent seem to bother him at all... if it did id bite the big one and take him to the vet)
iv even thought about trying to pop it myself but i dont think that would be the best thing for calpy
anyway calpy is an old cat and he weighs 21 pounds... he rules!
Why do you want to take chances? It might not be a hematoma, it might be filled with puss and when that gets into the blood stream in can be dangerous. It could infect other organs ... It might be something even worse ... You love this cat, and you two look lovely together in the picture, please AT LEAST go and have it checked out by your vet. Then you can still decide what to do next, but at least you know. Your cat depends on you.
And please don't attempt to open it yourself. This can cause even more severe problems!
the reason i dont want to take him to the vet is because i dont feel like spending the $50 to just have the vet tell me what it is then sucker me into paying more for him to drain it, if it will go away by itself... i dont have alot of money myself.
i will try to take a good picture of it when i have some batts charged up.
my parents already said no.. they say "hes getting old and hes not going to be around much longer"
so if it gets worse ill take him myself and pay for it... we had to put a cathider (sp?) in him twice, last time was pretty recent and i remember the bill being pretty big.
he does have a chip of skin off his ear from getting in a scrap with my dog about 3-4 years ago... i read injuries having something to do with hematomas? he's had this little chip in his ear for years though...
like i said it doesent bother him at all. He still acts the exact same as he always has.
You need to get him to the vet promptly...hematomas are extremely painful, and there is a great risk for infection, if it hasn't occured already. Cats do not show their pain, so just because he seems to be fine to you, doesn't mean he is.
$50 is more than reasonable for an exam, many vets charge much more than this. You owe it to your kitty to get this treated, and you also need to know that it hasn't developed into a more serious problem. Only your vet can determine that.
Judging by the picture, he is also overweight. You need to know that overweight cats are at risk for serious health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, liver disease and arthritis. Your vet can determine if your kitty should be put on a weight management program, this must be done slowly and cautiously in cats and only under direct supervision of your vet.
Don't wait any longer, if there is an actual hematoma on the ear, you must get it treated by your vet.
The same thing happened to my 16 year old cat and it will be fine. Go to the vet and have it drained. They will stich it open for about a week and then go back and have the stiches removed. They get them from shaking their heads a lot. Check for ear mites, thats what happened to my Alice. She got mites so deep in her ear that I didnt see them. So its worth the vet bill even at that age mine was 16 and now shes a healthy 18.
yes he is overweight (so overweight that he cant clean himself properly so we have to get him shaved every once in while)
we feed him special cat food with low ash in it (i think thats what it is) to help prevent him from getting more urine problems..
i would take him right away, trust me calpy is MY cat but i havent gotten paid from my work because they laid off the payroll lady thats another story...
traci if it was painful wouldnt he pull away when i touch it? or wouldnt he irratate it?
Do you even know if it is a hematoma, that is the point in getting him to your vet. You need to know that hematomas are painful, they can engorge and get infected....even if it reduces on it's own, there is a good chance it may already be infected. Hematomas on cats' ears are rare, so you need to have a vet look at it and make sure it isn't something else, such as a mass, or polyp , or worse, cancerous mass. It doesn't matter if it appears as if it doesn't hurt or not, chances are, it DOES. If it is another type of mass, it may not hurt, but it sure will spread and you can't take that risk, your vet is the only one who can determine for certain what it is.
Ask your parents to get him to a vet ASAP, pay them back when you get paid.
