runny nose and lack of appetite
i adopted my first cat two days ago, and she's been sneezing nonstop. she also has a runny rose and barely eats or drinks. i have no transportation for a few days, so i can't take her to the vet until friday. is there anything i can do in the meantime to improve her condition? and i'm also wondering what is wrong with her (i'm thinking just a cold or something allergic in my house)? she was spayed about a week ago (a few days before i adopted her) so i'm wondering if this might have something to do with it.

it sounds like a "cold" which can abecome serious if it get bacteriaal infected....if you can't get to a vet go to a drug store and get some saline pediatric nose drops and use them several times a day----this is not a cure----but if cats can't smell their food they won;'t eat it so if you get some of the gook out she might be able to smell and then eat----this is not a substitue for a vet visit....

This should NOT wait until Friday....get a friend or family member to drive you and kitty to your vet promptly.
Upper respiratory infections are common in shelter environments (if that is indeed where you got your kitty), but it sounds like hers is quite severe, and she needs seen and treated ASAP.
You cannot afford to have her anorexic, this can fast lead to dehydration and liver problems, so again, get a friend to drive you to your vet. When the vet examines her, ask him to double-check her spay incision area for any potential infection as well.

Has your cat has all it's vacinnations? I adopted a cat last week and he had the same symptoms. The shelter I adopted him from told me he was up on all his shots, but low and behold, he has feline distemper. Please PLEASE get the cat to the vet immediately.

Kasie, I read your post in the PrayerBook, if you are "watching him" at home..you truly need to let your vet hospitalize your kitten, with continuous IV fluids and supportive care. IV fluids are the mainstay in treating distemper, and absolutely no food until vomiting and diarrhea reside.
I can't stress this enough, distemper carries a better prognosis when the patient is hospitalized in an emergency care facility (24/7). The immediate and more agressive the treatment, the less chance of problems developing later on (like cerebellar hypoplasia, sometimes common in slow-to-recover kittens).
So, if your kitten is home with you, call your vet immediately and discuss hospitalization.
