? on using the litter box

Post by GA Jamie »

Am I correct in assuming cats "cover-up" their waste in the litter box? If so, why would one suddenly stop?

Thanks!

Usually not covering their waste is their way of saying, "I am the big cat here...the one in charge, so I will leave my odor for all to smell and know that it is me and my territory that you are within the boundaries of"

Kind of like a dog leaving his scent on every tree and post within a radius of his home territory...

It is just something you learn to deal with, or if you are lucky like me, you will have another cat who comes along and buries it for you :) or you just scoop the box alot...

Sometimes something is wrong with the cat. Maybe your kitty has a sore paw and it's painful to scratch around in the dirt. Have you checked each paw, including in between the toes and the toenails themselves to see if anything looks like a problem?

Sometimes there is something going on somewhere else in the body that is causing the cat to be indifferent to covering up in the litter box.

Why not watch your kitty for any signs of some physical problem--how's the appetite? Any signs of pain when eliminating? There can be a urinary tract infection or some other problem that doesn't always show up with easily detectable signs.

Or it could be that the litter itself isn't to your kitty's liking. Have you changed the type of litter you're using recently? If so, you could try going back to the old type of litter and see if that helps.

Or it could just be the kitty has out grown the litter box and doesn't have enough room. Wanda
