My cat has an abscess?

Post by jrenter »

Hi there,
Over the past 2 weeks or so, I've found a few "pimples" around his body. There is one near his hip, and a couple near his neck. They were quite hard and it looked like they had bled, but it was dry.
This morning, I found blood all over the floor of my house, and there was about a 3inch diameter circle of blood near his neck. It almost looked like there was an abscess there that had ruptured and it was dripping quite a bit.
I took him to the vet this morning and they said they wouldn't be able to look at him until about 8:30. I love him so much and I want to know that he's OK. I left there just balling my eyes out! :(

stop bawlling yout eyes out till you have something to cry about and chances are it , or they, will be routine abscess, possibly from scratching which generally heal up nice with antibiotics...when you find out would you repost please?

Taking him to the vet was the right thing to do. With some antibiotics I would guess that he should be OK....do you know how he got them? Is he an outdoor cat? If so I'd suggest making him an indoor cat to avoid this in the future. Let us know how things go

Although I'm not a mother and do not have kids, having this cat is part of the family. I wish I had a magic wand or something so I could just make all his abscesses go away.
Apparently they immediately did surgery on him after we brought him in. The vet said they shaved off the part where the blood was to get a look at it. I just want him to be OK.

Hey, yes, we got him back earlier this evening. God he looks awful but I am so so so glad he's OK! :) Here, I took a couple pictures of the wound. Apologies for the "graphic content" but that's how bad he is! I guess it's better than nothing!!

wow...that looks quite nasty! Did your vet give antibiotics? Just make sure it stays clean and watch out for any sign of infection such as discharge or odor. Any signs of changes in your cat too...being more lethargic etc. I'm sure he will be just fine. He's a beautiful cat from what I can see...I'd love it if you posted a pic of his face...you can do that over in Debbie's Cloud

Hi, yes, he is a beautiful cat. He's doing quite well. He ate and drank last night and was purring a lot. :) I guess it could have been worse! Whatever attacked him was very close to his main throat area, which could have killed him. We're thinking it might have been a bobcat or something (we live at the edge of town, in the prairies).

They are quite beautiful!! If you suspect that Vanilla was attacked by another animal I would strongly urge you to keep him inside at all times. He was very lucky this time...I'm so glad it wasn't worse :cat:
