Hissing and moaning after vet visit

Post by MA »

Our vet tech that normally runs this one forum is on leave right now. There is a posting there put up yesterday about a woman who took her two cats to the vets to get vaccinated. They got a distemper shot, and rabies, and a routine exam.

One cat is fine, the other is lethargic and moping around. When one cat approaches the sickly one, she gets hissed at and driven away. When the owner tries to pick up the ailing one, the cat moans and hisses. This went on for about 24 hours, but now the cat is just simply hissing. Eating and drinking but hissing? I advised to watch the cat, leave her alone and take her to vet if she got worse- but is this a normal reaction to a shot or a series of shots? I tried to condense the post as it is really long.....

Both injections can be painful, especially the rabies, so owner needs to be aware kitty is really sore, not to handle her, and may be for another couple days.

Lethargic, however, needs to be addressed. Eating and drinking normally are good, but if kitty has a fever, dilated pupils or any other obvious signs of distress, vet needs to recheck. Normally, vaccines will cause a short-lived reaction and kitty will be sore at the injection sites, and may not eat much in the first day post-vaccs, but if lethargy continues past this morning, time for a recheck.
