runny nose kitty

Post by JJathome »

Our new 6 mo old kitten Sam got checked out by the vet Monday and has a cold in his eye and a runny nose. He's on eye antibiotic ointment and amoxicillin orally and seems to have perked up, but I can hear him breathing (snorting and snuffling) from across the room and he blows bubbles out his nose. Is there anything to be done for relief or is it just bothering me more than him while he recovers? It looks miserable to me, but he's playing and trying to chase our older (1 yr old) cat Scuttle.

BTW, the intro seems to be going rather well as the older cat we thought would be aggressive, but she seems fascinated by little Sam. They chase each other up and down the stairs, although Sam gets winded rather easily due to his stuffy nose and has to rest. Overall, I am more than pleased at the outcome of introducing the two. I expected snarling and biting and so far have only had a few hissing episodes.

Anyway if anyone has a suggestion about the runny nose . . .wait a few days? or call the vet again? Sam has only had five doses of antibiotics (2 and a half days of the seven)

Thanks!
JJ

Just wanted to say, my vet called ME just now . . . wow . .I love this vet! Called to check on both my kitties as a followup call. I mentioned the runny, stuffy nose and she said it just takes time, use all the antibiotics and if it gets worse after that/does not improve, bring Sam back in.

Hi JJ. My cat got a bad infection when she was pregnant & one of the symptoms was a very runny nose, I´m talking great big strings of the stuff hanging out her nose and mouth, like on one of those huge dogs! She was prescribed an antibiotic shot every 3 days til it cleared up but she had the symptoms (sneezing, runny nose & eyes etc) for about a week in total. I kept her in the house & wiped her face with a warm wet flannel every half hour or so which she seemed to appreciate since she was too sick to clean herself. Hope your cat is better soon! :) PS sounds like you have a good vet!
