Trouble is beating up Fred

Post by guitarsjb »

This just started today out of the blue. Trouble started beating up Fred. I mean stalking him, chasing him down, and acting like she was trying to kill him. Fred ran and hid in the pet taxi. It has happened 3 times so far today. He is afraid, it's obvious. But she is not bothering Patches at all. Trouble is approx. 2 years old, Patches is 16 and Fred is almost a year...I was holding Fred earlier, and Trouble was sitting at my feet growling and tried to climb up me and get him.
I love Trouble dearly, but can not tolerate this behavior. I was just wondering if anyone else has went through this. I will wait and see for the next few days how things go.
I appreciate your help.

Was there some incident earlier that may have provoked her?

If it happens again, try a short time-out for her in another room.

Traci,
I don't know of any provocation. But we weren't here all day, and something could have happened. Today when I got home from work, she attacked him again...But they have been fine since. I think I will try the time out if it happens again.
I just don't understand her ...
Thanks

tons of things could of caused this and they all are usually a behavioral interaction of some sort. triggered by smell, sight of another animal, a sound you made recently or something that Fred has done or you did with Fred that has triggered a past interaction with Trouble.

time-outs work well, but i would not advise to use them heavily in this situation...use them only when Trouble is really deserving of it, not just hissing or growling but actually attacking. i would also provide Trouble with alot of attention while Fred is around and give Fred attention when he is isolated (at least at the moment) since you dont want Trouble reassociating this behavior to you, but you dont want to ignore Fred as you mention he is feeling stressed.

good luck, let us know how it goes and what worked well for them.
