Bird catching

Post by uk_ghost_rider »

One of my cats has a nasty habit of catching birds (not killing them) and bring them back through the cat flap. This almost daily now and really unpleasant. Is there any way i can stop him from killing all these birds.

I would be greatfull for any tips.

Thanks

keep your cat indoors, that is the only solution.

My cats also do the same thing, they bring mice and/or birds home with them. If i am home i leave the cat door open and if they bring something inside with them (they also bring in large spiders and worms which isn´t so great) i usually chase them back outside. If i am not home then i do not allow the cats to go outside so that i don´t come home to a dead mouse (or a live one). So the only suggestions i have is live with it and chase them back outisde when they bring something home (which i`m sure you already do), don´t let your cats outside anymore, or lock the cat door so that the cat can only enter your home if you let it in (which i wouldn´t suggest because your cat, probably like mine, is already familar with coming and going as it pleases. To change that wouldn´t be fair or good for your cat). I´m sure you were hoping for a better response, but since i guess the instinct of a cat is more powerful than what an owner wishes it would/wouldn´t do, this is the only answers i think are available.

there are tons of dangers with this, not only the animals you mentioned but also other outside dangers like vehicles, etc.

That is true. The only thing i have done to try to make things safer is my yard is fenced in, sides and top, so the cats cannot leave my yard. Where i live that is possible to do. Unfortunately though i can´t keep the small birds and mice out of my yard. :D
