Traci, our signals perhaps have gotten crossed. the First doctor, did NOTHING for my cat but give him enemas. And prescribe lactulose, & put him on a DIET, that nearly killed him.
the second vet took the sonagram and found the tumour. They advised me to have him get cortisone shots. Every 2 weeks to perhaps put him into remission. but that it may come back. that is what they told me. This cat is too weak for any surgery because the first quack put him on a diet of R/d when he had cancer, and was about to lose massive amounts of weight all by himself. I do believe had I not made the poor cat eat the R/d for almost a month he would have more weight on himself today to fight this disease.
I am going to ask the second vet tomorrow why they didnt feel that prednisone was the way to go. Now while he got the shot of cortisone they also gave him fluids which helped him. they also gave him a shot of Metocloprmide for the nausea. I have metocloprmide pills in quaters here to give him a quarter tablety a day, but I just tired that & he started drooling. So I just gave him water to make him feel better about the drooling. He hasn gotten sick since the injections, so maybe I shouldnt bother with the metoclopramide until he shoes signs of it. He was getrting this bad wretching of his stomach muscles which I dont see now either. He is eating good today, but seems sluggish tonight. Maybe he is full and needs to move his bowels. I havnt been able to get him to move his bowels by himslef in quite some time. I have to give him some glycerin with a baby applicator to get him to go. But I hold off on that as long as I can in hopes he will move his bowels himself. He went yeasterday, so we'll see, maybe by the morning, or I will have to consider more glycerin. I asked the second Vet if this was an ok procedure, he said it was.

Let me ask anyone who may have an answer. Is there any chance at all, that this tumour isnt malignant? And that maybe if it gets shrinked with medicine it will never come back? I had 3 other cats in my life The first one lived 14 years, the second one lived 18, & the 3rd one lived with spunky until 2 years ago died of the age of 20 years old.
Both vets have told me that Spunkies liver, kidnies, etc, show no signs of any malfuntion through blood tests. And between the 2 vets they took a slew of blood tests on this poor cat. they checked him for parasites, feline leukemia, feline aids, CBC's 3 different times. All came back negative or no signs of abnormalcies. The 2nd vet did say he is showing anemia, & that perhaps made her suspect cancer.

First of all...I am so sorry your Spunky is so sick...It is so hard watching our baby's suffer...I know you are doing everything you can to help him.
In your first post you asked: "Besides following this new Veteranians directions. Is there anything I can do to help him get better."
I think that Traci's and Davet's suggestions are a good start to this...why don't you print out their posts and bring them with you to the vet's. If your vet is any good at all they won't mind suggestions on how to help your Spunky...in fact I would think he/she would welcome them. If there is a reason the vet is not doing this...he/she will at least be able to explain why to you...
Give Spunky a big kiss for me and keep posting...

Ok, my confusion, but it doesn't matter which vet did what, ultimately, it is a pro consult with whom you need to discuss these issues.
Your first vet prescribed R/D because he was under the assumption that megacolon was a factor. R/D is a fiber related diet that can be used for megacolon, but it wouldn't be a diet I would recommend for a megacolon case. A hypoallergenic diet or novel protein diet would have been the proper recommendation, but each kitty is different, each requires a special diet that will work for them.
The frequent enemas I question. I don't know what he found during those procedures, or if the stools were compact, hard and causing other problems, whether he had to manually intervene, or if the enemas provided instant relief at the time. The lacutlose would not have hurt him given so frequently, but the enemas could. At that time, he should have opted instead for an endoscopy, but again, I don't know if he gave you other options, if you declined, or what. Saying megacolon and saying nothing else without ruling out differentials, is not the best practice.
If your second vet performed x-rays and an ultrasound but didn't opt for an endoscopy, then it's anyone's guess if megacolon or related mass or inflammation (or even intestinal disease) may still be a potential problem. In megacolon or inflammatory bowel disease, we usually would rather try correcting and treating with diet and supplemental medications where necessary. But if kitty doesn't respond to that, then we opt for an endoscopy to tell us if there are other causes, blockages, masses, obstructions, lymphoma, severe inflammation or strictures that are causing the problem. Again, I don't know if ultrasound was enough to say "cancer", and I would ask a specialist if a needle-aspirate were feasible or approachable.
Bloodwork often does not detect cancer until it is in late-stage disease. Related problems, however, can be detected through bloodwork, and the anemia would be of concern. Is the anemia caused by tumor progression, or is it caused by insufficient nutrition/fluids, cortisone, other causes? This is what your vet needs to be focusing on, and getting kitty on a diet he can absorb and digest; that may be a gruel, or simply a bland intestinal diet to help prevent vomiting and gastric upset. The metaclopramide should be given shortly before a meal, and I suspect the drooling is due to the bitter taste, so ask your vet for an oral suspension liquid instead, this can be given through a syringe quickly to help bypass that initial bitter taste and drooling. It is also available in injectable form that can be given at home (sub-q), but must be dosed and given carefully. If you want to learn how to do this, ask your vet, and she can instruct you, give you small doses made up in syringes, and tiny needles to minimize stress of injections. The injections are usually longer lasting and bypass the need for oral administration. I would also recommend learning how to do sub-q fluid administration at home if your vet feels kitty is frequently dehydrated. Dehydration and insufficient nutrition can definately lead to constipation and hard stools, nausea, vomiting. You can also supplement with Laxatone and Nutrical, both are palatable pastes that come in a tube, and can even be mixed into food. Ask your vet about these things.
Just a thought, but do you feel your second vet was thorough with the ultrasound? Sometimes, the vet isn't well versed in ultrasonography, so once again, this is where an oncologist should be consulted. The oncologist can review current x-rays and the ultrasound film and maybe detect what the other vet didn't.
I don't know what else to tell you. You do need to see an oncologist. For determining the type of mass, determining if it is in an operable area, and to determine the treatment approach for kitty's particular needs. Your current vet also needs to make herself available to you for phone calls, questions, so that you can get your concerns met in a timely manner. If this is cancer, there are various problems that could develop that demand her immediate attention and she needs to be available to you.

Traci & all well wishers, please don't think that I don't apreciate your input, I do tremendously. I'm just very confused, I will certainly ask the vet about your suggestions. As for whether or not they were thorough in the ultrasound, I couldnt tell you they took the cat early in the morning & didnt do it until late in the afternoon.I know this because I called at 3:00 pm & it still wasnt done, about 4:00 we got the daignoses. I was upset to have to leave the cat in a cage all that time, but thats the way it is I guess.I had to wait a week for the test to be scheduled, that was the first avialable date.
The Doctor didnt sound too encouraging at all when he told me & I was crying so hard all I digested was that there really were not too many options that it was a very large mass. The next day his partner explained the options, surgery being not possible now because of the health of the cat, from not eating. I was pouring my heart out to the first vet about the poor cat not eating & he was so stuborn about him being blocked up & I refused to take the poor thing back to them so they could do another enema when I knew he had no food in him to begin with.
My impressions are that the second vet actually does care about the cat. This is only his first shot of cortizone, he is on his forth day on it. the first day he looked all bugged out in the eyes, which was my Birthday. but that may have been from the metoclopramide shot. Which can make people dizzy so I can imagine what it did to him. This vet also everytime they see him they gave him iv fluids. Since yesterday he has been drinking a lot of water and eating like a horse. Also peeing a lot.
I have been trying to give him food with a lot of fish which have that Omega3 fatty acids. Fancy Feast puts out a lot of fishy foods in Aspic that he loves. I figure there is a very low rate of Cancer to Eskimos and they live on fish, so thats my thinking there. I hope I'm not huriting him by giving him fish, but at this stage I think just to get him to put back some pounds.
He is a very big boned cat he is huge, & his normal weight is around 19 lbs. He was 20.5 before he got sick , now he is down to about 12 lbs. I guess. The last weigh last week was 14 lbs. His rear end has deteriorated to almost nothing & he has balance problems because of it.
I made a pppss, pppss noise at him and he flicked his ear at me, so he has good hearing, he follows my finger now quite well. He tried to do some scratching yesterday but fell down, so he is weak still. But I still have hopes. And will feed him with an eye dropper if he shows me he still wants to go on. I'll let you know how he progresses or what the docs at the 2nd vet say. They have 3 different docs there so its hard to really get a good grip. I will ask them about an oncologist.
Ps- Almost forgot, I do have some of that Petromalt, he was getting sick from it before being treated with shots , so maybe now it won't bother him. I also have pet tinic I was giving him to try to get him to eat before also, I dont know if I should keep giving him that now that he is eating, I'll ask the vet that too.
Thanks again for your suggestions.

I apologize if my posts sounded confusing. I just want to convey that ultimately, the oncologist should be consulted IMMEDIATLEY, so that you can begin a treatment approach that is going to at least offer some alleviation of some of kitty's symptoms.
The weakness in hind legs, vomiting, drooling, constipation problems, and weight loss are all concerning, combined, they are extremely concerning. While your vet may be telling you "let's start with this and wait and see", it is not a total treatment approach, because she is treating the unknown. If it is cancer, you need to know exactly what medical options are available. Chemo? Maybe. You have to have a confirmation from the pathologist before you could proceed with chemo. Palliative care? Absolutely, but again, not knowing if this is a malignant tumor vs benign or something else entirely, you still don't know what you're treating.
So, in a nutshell, the oncologist is virtually the ONLY qualified person to tell you if this is cancer or not, and how to treat it effectively, or how to treat it conservatively. I feel really bad for you and your kitty, because all of this should have been done at the onset of the first symptoms, your first vet should have been more investigative, and your second vet should have sent you to an oncologist right away. Your next step, and to be done ASAP is the oncologist. If your vet isn't willing to do that for you, get kitty to an ER vet hospital immediately who WILL refer or consult with an oncologist on your behalf. Kitty's symptoms seem to be progressing, you absolutely cannot risk that.

Re: Cat Diagnosed with Cancer very late in the game
I know honey......I had a cat who lasted 15 years.....same thing never sick then BOOM! One Vet said she was constipated.....Sabbath lost alot of weight....she went from a big ol fatty to like 4 pounds. She also had cancer of the tummy. It was very hard cause she still had them clear pretty eyes. I had to put her down. It was the hardest thing I ever had to do. As much as I loved her I was not that close to her. She was kind of a *beep* and she was more my sisters baby. MY baby is Lumpers I still have her and she is 17 now. Still has SPUNK goes flying across the room and furniture. She now though has a serious cough. No one can find out why. I just love her and thank God he lets me have her another day. I hope you feel better.

Update on Spunky
Today is Friday May 23. Spunky had his second cortizone shot today. I enquired about Prednizone, the doctor said the cortizone shots are basically the same thing as prednizone, only with prednizone you have to give them pills twice a day, the cortizone shots are long lasting.
Now for his progress.. when I started this post Spunky was literally on deaths doorstep. A few days after his first shot he started nibbling a little on food, then eating about a 6oz. can a day which is still practically nothing for him. but the next day he ate 2 cans. He has now gained some wieght back. And he is eating about 3-4 cans per day of the 6oz. cans of Fancy Feast. I am giving him a steady diet of fish. ALl kinds, they are supposed to be good with the omega 3 fatty acids that are said to be good cancer fighting ingredients. I have not had to give him anything at all to help him move his bowels, nothing. the cat has not gone to the bathroom normally since Novermber of 2002. He now has 1-2 good bowel movements per day, he urinates mormally. He is more active now, he looks out the window, & mows at birds. He rools on his back again & purrs. He rubs around our legs looking for treats. The doctors say this is temporary, yet they never remember this much success from the shots. I have been praying very hard, a lot of our church memebrs have too. The doctor said I should never give up hope in a miracle. Yet the past 2 years have been nothing but bad luck and family members dying on me so I dont know.
As far as Spunky is concerned, I can't afford to pay for the other route which would be a biopsy, surgery, chemo & or radiation. Last year I watched my Father have a tumour removed, & watched the cancer spread all over his body & the tubes coming out of every orifice of his body.My Father died a miserable painful, & undignified death. I dont know if I could put my favorite cat through all that anyway.
I am thankful of every day I have him here with me. Maybe God will give me just this one break.
Thanks for al the well wishes, & I will keep you up to date on his progress.

I'm glad for the improvement in behavior
I'm glad for the improvement in behavior - even if it is temporary. He's eating and can get some strength to fight this, which is good.
I believe in the power of prayer - and as I've said a million times here, God obviously cares about animals since He didcreate them for our enjoyment. And the fact that he had Noah spend many MANY months building an ark big enough to hold them, instead of just wiping them out and starting over with a clean slate, says a lot about how He feels about His creation.
Prayer definitely changes things, so don't give up on that! I'm praying for Spunky. I know where you're coming from....I think we all have been through some trying times with our beloved pets.
Please keep us posted, and I know that I for one will keep praying....
