Cat not using literbox

Post by Yumi »

Hullo everyone! I need some serious help that may save my kittie's life, along with her litter.

Kit wandered up to our house about a year ago. She was owned by someone and someone took special care to put her in our yard just so we'd find her (because we take care of cats a lot). She was house trained, we could tell that much.

Well, shortly after she arrived (she had been using the litterbox originally), Kit stopped using the litterbox and started going on the floor in this one spot. We tried moving the litter box there, but it doesn't help.

We have on other cat in our house, Prissy. Prissy normally goes to her own seperate litterbox in the hallway so they don't normally share. Kit and Prissy get along pretty well.

My mother is saying that if Kit doesn't start using the bathroom in the litterbox, she'll carry Kit to the humane society and the kittens, too, or shoot them if they're not old enough to be taken in.

Can someone please offer some advice on how to take care of this problem? I really need some advice on this. I don't think my mother will shoot them, but I know she'll take them to the H.S. ='O

Hi Yumi,

The very first thing you need to do is to take your cat to the vet. It is *extremely* common for cats to urinate inappropriately when they have a urinary tract infection and/or urinary crystals, both which are treatable, and both which can be very dangerous, even deadly. It is one of the most common complaints in cats, yet so many do not understand the the cat is telling the owner that something is wrong. If this has been going on for a year, you must not delay any longer. Get your cat checked right away with a urinalysis, and I would also have some blood work done to rule out illness, particularly kidney disease. I would bet that the person who left Kit in your yard did so due to this behavior, and it is a common reason people choose to get rid of their cats. Sadly, it us quite often due to illness, not an evil kitty, and could be easily treated. Please tell mom to put away the gun, and head to the vet. Good luck, kk
