I got this in a E mail today..dont know if its true...
From an article in the Phila. Inquirer today 4/6:
Easter lillies and their relatives the day lily, tiger lily, rubrum and oriental hybrid lily are HIGHLY TOXIC TO CATS. Just ONE BITE of the fragrant plant can cause kidney failure. It is not recommended that owners buy the plant because the cat will find it. It takes a small amount to kill a cat. Lillies contain an unknown toxin that cats can't metabolize. When they inget it, cats vomit, become lethargic and refuse to eat. If not treated aggressively within the first 18 hrs., cats go into kidney failure and once they go into it, it's so severe that most can't be helped. If treatment occurs before kidney failure sets in, the animals survive; if not, dialysis is needed. Most cats die and the few who survive suffer permanent kidney damage.
Most cat owners don't know the lillies are the cause if their pets get sick. Other plants like poinsettias, etc. cause only temporary illness and nothing like this.
Dogs are not adversely affected but a single nibble of the stems, leaves, or blooms will bring a cat to the ER.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON ASAP to all your cat owner friends.
