Is Rosemary Toxic?

Post by The_Dragon_Sorceress »

I can't figure out whether rosemary is toxic to cats or not. Many sites say Rosemary Pea is toxic to cats, but when I look it up, it doesn't seem to exist. Other sites list Rosary Pea instead of Rosemary Pea and when I searched, I got results that confirmed Rosary Pea was poisonous.
So.. is Rosemary Pea just a mistake?

The Rosary Pea and Rosemary Pea (note similar-sounding names but spelling differences) are both toxic. Some rosemary foliage species are also toxic.

I'm sure that most holistic or homeopathic vets will tell you rosemary is a perfectly safe herb to use, but the fact of the matter is that it may not be. It has been noted to be a hydrosol used in essential oils (contains ketones which are neurotoxic) and therefore, essential oils/aromatherapy should NOT be used on or around cats for any purpose.

For what purpose are you intending to use this? Better yet, consult your vet before using ANY homeopathic or herbal remedy.....please be aware NONE of them are regulated and most have been proven to be ineffective, and most do not have sufficient research or data to confirm efficacy or safety in pets. Your vet can also consult with the NAPCC for more data on this and other "alternative" herbs/substances.

Please NEVER take into your own hands administering herbs and such to your pets without your vet's direct advice/supervision, despite what you hear on the net (way too much misinformation, unvalidated, and much of it hype and marketing schemes). Just as an example, many herbs and other products can interfere or cause adverse results when used with other medications for a health condition, etc etc.

Several hours ago, I had actually put a wreath of rosemary on my cat.. (I was misinformed.. **smacks forehead**) After I ran into the confusing info about toxicity, I had taken it off and eventually washed part of his fur off..
I think it was on him for about 20 minutes... My mother will probably be disbelieving about the rosemary bit. ..
