3 yr old Stella's back legs dont work right

Post by 6krazykitties »

This posting is about my kitty Stella. I have another topic about my too skinny kitty Lucy as well. Here is a little background on the problems of poor Stella.
I adopted Stella in September 2003, she is the mother of a kitten I also adopted (Ringo). She is a sweet cat, who likes to hide (doesnt like my husband) and comes out at night to see me. The problems with Stella's legs started one day when she fell off the couch. She had snuck into the room without my noticing and fell off the couch, taking the cushion with her. I quickly went to her and saw her laying on her side with her leg in the air. I felt her to see if she had broken anything and she howled and howled. It was not possible for me to take her to an Emergency Vet Clinic, but first thing the next morning I did. She hadnt moved an inch from the place I left her. She couldnt stand, and would only fall on her side. The vet said she most likely sprained her hip, as xrays did not show any fractures. The next day Stella somehow dragged herself on to the window ledge, and fell off and hit the radiator and peed herself :( Her walking slowly improved, but she needed to go on medication to make her eat because she was losing weight. She got a blood test that also showed she had a low red blood cell count. Steroids are helping that, but weeks later she still doesnt walk properly. She no longer had to drag herself, and can get around, but when she walks it looks like she is crouching. She hobbles around and stumbles too. I have taken her to one of the best neurologists in Ontario but even she doesnt know what it is. She suggested an MRI, which is very expensive, and a long drive away to get it done. I was hoping maybe someone has some idea's, or has heard of anything similar? The vet said the only thing she has seen similar is a slipped disc but there in only one case of a 3 year old ever having that. If anyone has ever heard of anything like this please let me know. We are all at a loss as to whats wrong with Stella's legs.

just a guess but it sounds more like a back injury rather than a hip or leg injury...you might keep on the steroids at low dose for a longer period of time...i don't think an MRI or x=rays will show a heck of a lot....i suspedct steroids and tincture of time will rectify the situation but again, don't take this as final cause there probably is a thousand miles from here to you and difficult to diagnose....but i still think the back is the culpret...

We are in agreement that it is a back problem. That is why we went to see a neurologist. She too said its definately a problem with her back, but as to what the problem is, we do not know. She is still on steroids, its been two weeks now, but there has been no change in her problem while she is taking them. The only change due to the steroids is that her red blood cell count is back up. We do not know if her aenemia is related to her problem or not.

I hope Stella gets better...hopefully, it will be just a matter of time before she heals.

Please keep us posted.

It may not be neurological that you should concern yourself with, but rather orthopedic, in which case, try to get another opinion from a certified feline orthopedic surgeon, and get new x-rays done on both the hips, femurs, and spinal column to rule out new fractures, luxating patellar, or calcification or disc compression, etc. Also look into the diet and make sure there is no dietary deciency that she is lacking for bone strength.

Was an immunological profile done, and did it include ruling out fungal disease? I am referring to a full immuological profile that is sent to an outside lab.
