Strange litterbox behavior...

Post by Guest »

My cat's been having a sudden problem - what luck to find this place! This is similar to another problem a lady had, only in reverse!

We recently got a cat from the Long Beach Animal Shelter, about one and a half months ago, and he's been an angel about his litterbox - until now.

He seems to use it for peeing (luckily), but for feces he's taken to under my desk and a short ways from the 'box. I've tried to discourage the behavior, but it doesn't seem to be working very well.

Any help would be appreciated! ^_^

Sorry if this answer seems repetitive, but do you have two boxes for him? Most cats prefer one to urinate, one to defecate.

If he's leaving you suprises by your desk, he may be trying to tell you something. Have you changed anything in that room or within the home recently?

Two boxes? Really? I only have one, which was okay for my previous cat, and I believe he only had one at the shelter he was at for half a year... As for changing furniture around, it's been the same way since we got him...

I'd give him two boxes, but the problem is that we're trying to get he and the dog to know each other, and when we're not in carefully controlled sessions he's in my room; there's no space for a second box, in here...

Well there are several other things you can try (but I still recommend another box, maybe two small boxes, you can always put the other one in another room, like a utility room, as long as the area is safe)....

Change the litter type

Put the litterbox in a more private area, away from heavy traffic

If you are in that room, using your desk (i.e. online at pc), he may simply feel he needs your attention while you're in there, hence, leaving you a surprise to get your attention to some matter like attention or something else he is not happy with.

If you haven't had him checked by your vet since you adopted him, might be a good time to do so on the offchance he is developing an illness.
