Question about boarding 4 cats

Post by Tim »

Hi everyone, we have four cats. 2 are boys and are brothers and 2 are girls (not related) rescued from a local petsmart. All were gotten as kittens and have been with us for about 5 years in the same townhouse.

We are having a single family home built and it won't be ready until may sometime, but we go to settlement April 15th. That means that we will be living with the in-laws for about a month, but they don't want us to bring the cats because of various reasons, one of which is severe allergic reactions. We also have 3 dogs and they are ok with them because we can crate them.

My sister has offered a shed that was built to look like a miniature house, but it is just one room, but it has windows and a door and we can run heat to it. The only problem is that the cats would be there by themselves because I would be living 20 minutes south at the in-laws and work 45 minutes further South so staying at my sister's probably isn't feasible.

My question is, if we go up and visit the cats every other day or so and my sister goes down there with them daily, is it possible that they will get sick from being away from us. Should I expect any kind of behavior change after a month of them staying up there? I hope not because they are just the best behaved cats I've ever met and I wouldn't want them to change because of this.

My other options are to rent a place by myself with the cats for a month but that would be VERY expensive (over $1200 a month for short term lease). I thought about boarding them at a kennel or vet, but I'm not sure that would be much better.

What do you guys think? Thanks!

imho, a single room monitored by people your familiar with and yourself (after work, etc) would be better than boarding anywhere else.

there are alot of stresses your cat can endure having to sleep in a cage listening to odd and unfamiliar noises all day long, not to mention for a month. just way too much exposure to look forward to...if you can work around it (sounds like you can) i would.

only reason i would see for boarding is if your cats are totally unmonitored for more than a day or so in this room, then a boarding facility might be the safest, but will of course still be alot of exposure. a vet would be quite able to handle your cats if (especially) some of your cats have specific medical needs.

good luck, leaving your cats with anyone but yourself is always a pain....i know.
