Thyroid problems......msg.......UPDATED

Post by Haily's Mom »

Thanks for the replies! Jersey has now had her tooth removed and her teeth cleaned. Her liver enzymes and her thyroid were all back within normal range within 10 days. She is now on 1 pill a day for the thyroid instead of 2 and will be re-checked in a month to see if the dosage is right for her, or if it needs to be reajusted.

Hi I have a 12 year old cat, Jersey. I brought her to the vet Monday, she had started losing weight although she was still eating, and her water intake has been a little excesive. After running blood work for everything imaginable, and also x-rays it showed her thyroid was off the chart. Her liver enzymes were also elevated, which the vet said could be to do with the thyroid problem. She also has a heart murmur, II /IV systolic murmur. And she has an infected/ abscessed upper canine that needs to be removed, but not until everything else is under control. :(
She was startd on Tapazole 5mg. twice a day for the thyroid. And also Antirobe Aquadrops for the tooth. She goes back at the end of next week for a re-check of her thyroid level and liver enzymes.
Ok, now what I came here for was to here the good sucess stories of cats with thyroid problems and being able to live out normal happy lives on the medication. Does anybody else have a cat on thyroid meds?

will answer in a few months cause my daughter is taking her cat to deleware for iodine radiation of a thyroid...the only thing i can basically add is to get the lowest possible effective dose for tapazole ( qnd twice a week sounds good) because the drug can upset their system but i suspect so far so good...

Agree with Davet....lowest dose possible. ANY drug can have adverse reactions, tapazole included, discuss these concerns with your vet thoroughly and be prepared for frequent thyroid level checks to determine whether the med needs adjusting or not.

Ideally, radioiodine treatment would be best with a more favorable outcome as opposed to life-long meds or thyroidectomy. But, the radioiodine facilities are not always accessible to some owners (as well as cost).

To answer your question, yes, many cats lead normal lives with thyroid medications, but you still need to followup with re-checks, and keep an eye on her heart murmur.
