Cat ate ribbon

Post by jt »

We have a three-year-old male cat who has had vomitting and diarrhea all weekend. He seems to have eaten some ribbon (we found it in his vomit, and it's now coming out in his bowel movements.) Is there anything we can do to help him (he's miserable) or do we need to just wait and let it all get out of his system?

Thanks.

Please get your kitty to your vet or ER vet immediately...the vomiting and diarrhea may indicate the ribbon has wrapped around an intestine...only your vet can determine if it may need surgically removed. (you may need to be prepared for an x-ray and/or barium series to determine if it can pass using a laxative prep or if it will need to be surgically removed)

Don't wait on this, you can't take chances not knowing where the ribbon is located, or if it has wrapped around or perforated an intestine, etc....time may be of the essense!

Note: If you see ribbon protruding from the rectum/anus, NEVER attempt to pull it out, you don't know where the other end is.

agree with Traci and don't try to pull it out yourself cause it may have engulfed a bit of gut...may not but when you find lut it is too late, the damage is done

I have had experience with this, and you must get to a vet asap. My kitten ate a yo-yo string which was sticking out of her anus, and we took her right in for an xray. Luckily it came out and no damage was done. As others have said, the vomiting and diarrhea indicate something is wrong, please do not delay take kitty in for help immediately. Ribbon has sharp edges which can injury internal organs.
