Ewe Yuck-Worms HELP!

Post by 4CatsAtHome »

How disgusting!!!! I just discovered that at least one my four inside cats has a tapeworm. My vet is over an hour away and traveling with four cats is NOT a pleasant experience. My question is: Can I or should I treat all of my cats for tapeworms even if they may not all have them? Can I get the medication over the counter or does it have to come from a vet? This would be much easier than loading them up and going to the vet. But if it isn't a good idea I guess I'll get the ole cat carriers out of the shed and head that way....Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Hi...I would strongly advise AGAINST using any over the counter dewormer or flea remedy for any of your pets. I'm afraid loading them up and taking them in is the best bet for you. We had a bout with tapes a while back and treated all of our cats. You will need to treat them for fleas also, since this is how the usually get the tapeworms.

Thanks Tina. After reading your post I called my Vet and explained the situation and (I love him) he is going to mail me the medicine to treat all four cats!

I'm soooo glad I found this site. I'm sure I'll have more questions in the future! I'm going to look at the Memorial section also.....I lost my precious little dog Shaggy last week to kidney failure....a whole other story.

Thanks again,
Leah

Chances are if they have worms, then they probably have fleas too. There is a new product out that is supposed to kill fleas, ticks, lice and worms. It works like Advantage, meaning you place it on the back of their neck. I can't remember the name of it but you might want to check w/your vet. My two cats had worms and it treated the worms/fleas within 2 days.
