HIMALAYAN JUST DIAGNOSED WITH PKD>>HELP!!!

Post by Luna'smom »

hello dear cat lovers.
I just found this site after desperately searching on the web.
My precious Himalayan Luna, 9 years old,
was just diagnosed a few hours ago with PKD, polycystic kidney disease.
:(
She has always been totally healthy and absolutely gorgeous (and she knows it, of course!), and I had noticed she seemed a bit thinner
for the first time ever. We took her in to the vet, who did blood work, ultrasound, etc, and diagnosed her. She said this was very common in this breed, which I did NOT know, and said cats can either live with it or fade quickly. I am beside myself with horror and shock, and heartbroken!
Luna has cysts in both of her kidneys, seems fine now, but they say there is no way to tell what happens.
DOES ANYONE HAVE CATS WITH PKD, or know of anyone who does?
I have been trying to find an on line support group but cannot.
I am also trying to find out if there is anything natural that can be done to slow the failure or growth of cysts.

I would appreciate any help at all from anyone. I cannot rest until I find out all I can for my beloved Luna..
Love to you all,

Hi,

I don't know much about it, nor have i had any experiences myself with this particular disease, but here is a link I found: http://www.felinepkd.com/. I have dealt with Chronic Renal Failure, and my boy lived for over four years after his diagnosis.

Also, Debbie has health links here: http://www.geocities.com/debbielinklett ... links.html. Look under N-P, then "Polycystic Kidney Disease" for several more links. I hope that Luna will be one who can live a long time with this disease.

(((hugs))), kk

Barbara, here is another link to a PKD discussion in this forum, including a couple other links (try to overlook the personal conotation in that thread)

I would suggest you seek another vet who is more experienced in the condition (feline-only vet or specialist). Kathy James, DVM whose info is included in the thread would be a good consult for your vet or a new vet.
