Help!! New mommy won't take care of kittens!
My cat had to have an emergency c-section and she won't take care of her kittens, she is even hostile towards them....any advice would be appreciated!! Thanks
When was the surgery, and is she home now?
If she cannot or will not nurse them, you must step in and begin supplementing them with kitten formula and bottle-feeding (KMR kitten formula).....please get the dry in the cannister form, it can be mixed according to the package directions, and the unmixed cannister can be stored in the fridge for up to three months.
You will also need to purchase kitten bottles and nipples. Be sure to pierce the nipples because they aren't pierced in manufacturing.
Feed them the appropriate amounts as indicated on the KMR package directions, they are appropriate for newborns.
Be sure to stimulate each kitten after feeding for normal urine and bowel function. Each day they should be gaining weight, showing interest in activity, etc...should any of them appear to be not nursing from bottle feeding, not producing a normal urine amount/bowel movement each day, don't hesitate to get them seen by your vet immediately.
As for the queen, try introducing one or more kittens to her intermittently for a few days. If she is painful due to the surgery, contact your vet for further instructions. It could be that she will not take to the kittens, so in that event, you must supplement them with bottle-feeding and ensure they are getting proper amounts of formula each day. In a few days, she might be feeling better and may allow them to nurse, but don't force the issue if she clearly is not wanting to nurse them. Don't be afraid to call your vet for further instruction.
