Hi
I just registered in this forum and was wondering what your thoughts are on using a vitamin b-12 supplement for elderly cats. I have a 20 year old black persian named Jasmine. She is not very active, sleeps most of the time. She was just to the vet and checks out fine except for constipation, the vet prescribed Lactulose and it seems to be helping her. She eats well, drinks the proper amount of water and looks good. I was reading about b-12 and wonder if it might help her energy level. I am thinking a little activity my help with the constipation.
TIA
Sheila
PS: the picture of the kitten in the food bowl is hysterical
B-12 for cats.
Re: B-12 for cats.
If your vet pronounced her in good health, don't mess around with supplements, they should only be used in cases of deficiencies or illnesses which may require supplementation. B-12 would probably only help with appetitie and metabolism, if that; it is stored for long periods in the body, naturally.
As for the constipation issue, discuss dietary modification with your vet. Older cats sometimes need the diet adjusted for nutrient availability, especially in cats who are less active, or those suffering from any primary health illness.
Assuming during the last check-up, your vet performed a complete blood profile, including urinalysis and thyroid function testing? If not, now is the time to do so.
