Male Cat Spraying

I have a neutered male cat who has been living in my home a couple months. I have a spayed female cat also that I've had for about 6 years. Last week my male cat sprayed the drapes in my living room right in front of me. I told him no and put him out for about 30 minutes. Tonight, he sprayed my shower curtain (I was in the bathroom at the time). I again told him no quite loudly and put him in his room for about 15-20 minutes. Will he always do this? What can I do to try to stop it?

First and foremost is getting him to your vet for a full exam and possible urinalysis to rule out urinary tract infection/obstruction. Sudden spraying/marking behavior is most often kitty's way of alerting you to a potential health problem. Please get him seen by your vet immediately.

If you meant that you actually put him outside after he sprays, this is NOT the solution, nor is it fair for his safety. Don't put him outdoors for any reason, he's safer indoors, and if you don't recognize a potential health problem, being outdoors could lead to disaster (kitty running away, other obvious outdoor hazards). Bottom line, get kitty seen by your vet promptly.
