8 year old female PJ was vomitting constantly Firday
My 8 year old female has always been healthy until Friday night when she began vomitting every 30 minutes or so, first food, then white bile, and then clear liquid with a little blood.
Took her to Vet Saturday Morning and got x- rays and blood work--nothing could be found to explain the vomitting.
We went home and she continued to vomit less frequently, but with increasing amounts of blood.
Took her back to the vet and admitted her. GI test went all the way through the system. Agreed to surgery to look for obstructions and and take samples for Biopsies. No obstructions found, but the vet said the liver did not look quite right, but said he could not make a confident call without the results.
Now Waiting for results of biopsies. She went 12 hours after surgery with out vomitting but when she was given water she vomitted again two times last night. She looks good and alert (even with the stress of being in the hospital). Just awaiting results now...
Has ayone had simialar situation..have I done everything I can to help her?

Oh my, I'm sorry that you have to go through this. Just a question...did you open a new bag of food? This has happened to my cat before but luckily I took the food away. He was fine shortly after that. It sounds like you have done everything you can for her. To me, it sounds like a poisoning of some kind...any chance she could have gotten into something?

Re: 8 year old female PJ was vomitting constantly Firday
A couple possibilities....this is reaching, but rancid food could be a differential to rule out (fyi, Petcurean's Go! Natural dog and cat foods have been pulled from market recently due to reports of aflotoxins, reports include seriously ill pets and some deaths, liver enzymes were most often remarkable, meaning liver toxicity)
Since it seemed to be a sudden onset, toxicity of any cause would be a major rule-out to consider, and would ask your vet to test specifically for toxicosis (the biopsy report may indicate this as well).
Another consideration might be associated pancreatic attack, did your vet mention anything about seeing abnormalities, abcesses, etc on the pancreas? Were pancreatic enzymes out of normal range?

PJ Update..all bios came back negative...pancrious is fine and no toxians found....tested all we can and found nothing.
Cant keep her in the hospital forever and she cant live without food...they are going to try and get solid food in her and then see what happens
What to do?

It might be time for a second opinion. Concerning is that your vet made comments the liver didn't look quite right. In the absense of lab results that haven't produced anything confirmative and a negative biopsy, you should consider a more advanced approach with a more qualified vet or even vet surgeon (whom your vet can consult with on your behalf). There may be something amiss that another vet may be able to pick up on right away. I wouldn't wait to find out.

Hung out with PJ for a few hours last night at the hospital...she seems very much alert and normal(except she is not eating)...she is over the hosptial and scared but that is to be expected...she did not eat last night but she did not vomit either (she was dry heaving the other night). I am considering bringing her home for a night to see if she will eat in a friendly environment then re admitt if she vomits again??????
She is a very very very shy and nervous cat and the hospital is hard on her.
The vet has no more tests to run and is hoping it is something that is passing....they are begining to help financailly also.

The vet has sent the bios and test to Colorado State for review on their dime...i guess that is a second opinion

Good call on your vet's part (finally). CSU is an exceptional consultation resource, I hope they can get to the root of this problem....can you update us when you know more? (Did your vet say when he would get back to you?)

Re: 8 year old female PJ was vomitting constantly Firday
They said a day or two...PJ has not thrown up in 30 hours but has just had her first syringe feed but appears to be keeping it down but is on anti-vomitting meds. The vet hopes she is just working through a gastrol bug or something
Re: 8 year old female PJ was vomitting constantly Firday
Is PJ still at the clinic? Do you know what they're feeding her? If the vet suspects a liver problem, it's probably a high calorie recovery diet, but since she is recovering from a radical surgery, probably would be better to feed a really bland food.
Two days is pushing it for that consult...unless he is waiting for a particular specialist to get back to him.
