Allergy Injections...

Post by Sara »

Has anybody gone through a series of allergy injections to build an immunity to allergies? Thank you.

Yep, I have and am currently doing so again. Started up about a year ago with shots twice a week, then once a week, then once every two weeks and now once a month. My allergies are seasonal as well as to animals and while the shots haven't elminated the symptoms 100% they do help considerably.

Of course the first thing the allergist told me was to take up the rugs in my home and get rid of my cats. I only have one room with a rug in it and it can't be taken up without serious $$ being spent because a proper floor would need to be put in. As far as getting rid of my cats, he was a bit rude when I told him it wasn't an option. I think his comment was something like "and people wonder why they don't get better". When he asked again about the cats on my follow up visit, I lied and said they were at my mom's.

I'm actually looking to get a substantial air purifier. I have a small HEPA filter but have been reading up on something better.

Do you need to go?

It's not me it's Vest but I assume it's the same sort of treatment as us humans get. An air purifier sounds like a great idea. I hope someday you can get that rug taken up and a different floor put in. I know carpets must trap allot of allergins.

Vest got his blood test results back and has allergeies to various things. Luckily nothing to wool but he showed a reaction for cotton, inhailed allergins from mold and fungus and diet allergins such as corn, chicken, tuna, milk, wheat etc.

We were offered the injections. It's not a for sure solucion but we can give it a try. I think his main problem is food. The thing is he hates the hypoallergenic foods and it's really hard seperating him from the rest at feeding times.

I am glad to know that your injections are helping you. Were Cats the main allergin or do you have several? Does bathing them help? What about getting one of those paper face masks to use while grooming. I know my sister used to have a cat allergy but once she had a cat for a while she became immune and now she does not have any problems. Do you feel you are getting better as the years go by?

Ohhhhh I wasn't aware of allergy injections for cats. I remember asking a vet we used to go to about them and he told me no.

I was born with asthma and allergies so have dealt with it all my life. Trees, pollen, dust, molds, dog, cat and roach dander!! are what bothers me. Ewwwww roach dander! I didn't even know there was such a thing and thankfully don't have any but when they did the scratch test it apparently was one of the things that flared up. I do have to take a hit off of an inhaler now and then but aside from a little whistle in my chest I really didn't notice a difference since having cats. I think you do get immuned ... to your own anyway. I actually break out in a full blown asthma attack when I overplay with my sister's dog or if I'm out in cold weather. Otherthanthat, I feel the same now with my allergies compared to when I was 7 years old and getting shots.

The only food allergy I have is to nuts, pine nuts specifically. I learned about that one almost dying from anaphylactic shock twice; hidden ingredients can be a true killer!

I wish I had some advice for Vest and really hope he can get situated soon. I'm sure the reactions really do a number on a little furbaby. Good luck with the shots if that's the route you guys go!

Have you eliminated corn, wheat etc in his diet. I would try the shots as a last resort, they may work, but usually cause some symptoms. I went through these and it caused my arm to swell, but in the long run it does seem to work. Ask your vet about reactions etc.
