engorged mammaries

Post by Tina B and crew »

OK...I hadn't seen the kittens nursing for a while so I assumed they were weaned...they were eating solid food on a regular basis and are over 8 weeks. The vet had an open space to put them up for adoption (we have to take open space when we can get it) so I took them in this week. But Victoria stayed here because they didn't have enough space to put her out for adoption. Now I've noticed she has engorged mammary glands...so far they aren't red or really tight, but I'd like to prevent that if possible. Is there anything I can do? I'm going to call the vet tonight when they are in and see what they recommend, but in the mean time I want to make sure she is comfortable. Will they eventually go down?

Normally, they would dry up...but if they are engorged, red, brusied or oozing, don't wait, get her in immediately (to rule out mastitis or pyometra, latter unlikely at this point)

For today, try applying warm compresses, this might encourage milk flow just so that she feels better in the meantime til you can get to your vet. Do you have a spay scheduled yet?

Traci...thanks...no they aren't red or extremely tight yet, just full..I can tell there is definitely milk in there. I do remember that one or two of willow's did this when her kitten weaned and they did go down on their own. But with Victoria it's ALL of her glands it feels like! I'll keep my eye on her throughout the day and call them tonight. No she doesn't have a spay scheduled yet, but should go in soon so she doesn't go into heat. Probably won't be able to get a spay scheduled until next week because they are usually too busy to do it on weekends.

Well, this could get very uncomfortable for her, so when you call your vet, ask if he would be willing to give her an injection to help dry up the milk.

I hope your vet was able to help her and that she's feeling better by now. Give her a kitty kiss for me!
