New cat aggressive towards other cat

Post by carolmb »

Hi-I have a question. I have a male cat named "Sam" who is ~11 years old. He has been the only cat for about 5 years now. He is a very laid back cat. Last Monday we brought home a new female cat that my son found at school and begged me to keep, her name is "Taylor". We took her to the vet and she was spayed and had all of her shots. The vet thinks she is between 6mos and 1 yr in age. We also have 2 dogs that are Labs. The problem is that the new cat is aggresive toward "Sam". She seems to be adjusting to the dogs better. I am just curious as to how I should handle getting the two cats to tolerate each other. Thanks for your help.

This might help....Jason has also posted two other links from the forum in that thread that may help.

New introductions do take time, try not to expect harmony too soon. For some cats, it could be instantaneous, others could take several months to warm up and accept one another. Be patient, forgiving, and give them both plenty of love and attention as they learn to accept each other. Keep a close eye on Sam, his behavior and his eating habits/litterbox habits, because at his age, you don't want to risk additional stress causing a health concern.

I am having the same problem right now, but in reverse. My resident kittie is aggressive towards the new addition, and now towards us as well. I turned to this board for help, and have found it running over. You have come to the right place and I wish you the best of luck with Sam and Taylor.
