Scooter and urinating..

Post by Idenshi »

Well, apparently Scooter urinated in a spot next to the door (inside) when he had his UTI, and sort of made it his mark now....My mother is getting extremely irritated, and has threatened to get rid of him for this....Are there any ideas to stop this behavior?

I used to have the same problem. The first litter from my cat, Whistle, contained one little mishappen kitten who seemed very confused. He would go over to my closed bedroom door (I had white carpet, by the way), do his business, then traipse over to the litter box and scratch around in it after he was done. We continually tried placing him firmly in his litter box when it was obvious he was about to do his business in the floor, but it never worked. Finally we realized that the reason he continued to do it there was because that was where he smelled it. We deoderized the spot very well (we had been getting it up, but I guess the smell wasn't gone) with bleach (which I guess you can't do if you have colored carpet: Clorox 2 maybe? [for colors]) and he never had a problem after that. It may not work for everyone, but it worked for us!

The smells could still be there, despite the tile. You might not be able to smell it, but Scooter can. I'd try an enzymatic cleaner like Nature's Miracle to get rid of the smell. Clorox bleach is poisonous to cats and I have read that they are attracted to the smell (can't confirm if this is true, though). Good luck and please don't get rid of the kitty!

Your above statement indicates why he urinated outside the box, he was trying to tell you he was sick. Is Scooter neutered? Cats who are not neutered will mark their territory over and over again.

Do use an enzyme cleaner to stop the odor like Nature's Miracle, bleach is not a good choice.

Good luck and please have patience and I do hope you will not have to get rid of Scooter.

Well, we tried the bleach (I certainly hope it's not poisonous to kitty..), but he STILL went...

He is, indeed, neutured (and then some), but the vinyl tile is starting to come up due to his constant urinating there. My mom is now suggesting mothballs, along with the fact we'll have to do something with Scooter if he keeps it up, and i refuse to let this happen.

So try Nature's Miracle? Where might it be bought..? And are mothballs a bad idea?

Do NOT use mothballs, they are toxic to cats.

Nature's Miracle, Simple Green and other enzymatic cleaners are available at any larger pet store retail outlet, Walmart, Petsmart, etc.

Another thing (which your mom needs to take into consideration) is stress, if she is not handling this well and is showing obvious signs of disdain or reprimand, your kitty is picking up on this and it's causing him more stress. Ask her to remain patient while the two of you investigate the cause of the marking. I would strongly suggest a recheck urinalysis promptly to make absolutely certain he has not developed another UTI or other health condition.

Also evaluate his litterbox...is it away from high-traffic areas? Does he have a problem with the litter type? Is the box in a downstairs or basement area, unaccessible to him? Is it scooped and cleaned on a daily basis? Have there been any recent changes in your home that would be causing him undue stress?

I have had the same problem with some of my cats. First, make sure he is not sick with a bladder infection. Other than that there is a product called Anti-Icky-poo that is enzymatic + non toxic and gets rid of animal odors.
You can order it on line from www.MisterMax.com
I think the spraying is just a territorial thing with some cats and once they mark an area all you can do is keep it from smelling. Good Luck, JJ

Ok, so my mom refused to do anything until she saw if mothballs worked, so she put some under a bit of carpet at the door so Scooter couldn't get to it. It actually worked for awhile, but this morning we found another puddle...

Will something like "Nature's Miracle" work if the smell has seemed to soak INTO the vinyl tile?

If none of this works, my parents are only going to do one more thing, and I refuse to let it go that far..

Moms can be hard to figure out...some deal with very out-dated info. I know I did. When I got married and got our first pet, I was dealing with what I was taught, and it was not very good. Have you shown your Mom this thread? Maybe it would help convince her to have your kitty checked out by a Vet. another thought...do you have a few replacement tiles? Maybe you could pull a few out, soak the underlayment with Nature's Miracle, and lay some new tiles down. But first, get kitty checked out...nothing will help unless it is healthy. And the mothballs have to go!
