just curious about something my cat does....

Post by 2_sox_squared »

hey, thanks for the quick advice so far.

i've noticed something that my cat does and i'm wondering why!

we used to have his food and water next to his litterbox, (not so close that litter would get in his food, but proximate) now that we've moved to a bigger place, his litterbox is across the room from his food and water. when they were close together, he would scratch in his litterbox after he pooped to cover it up (i know this is normal) but also scratch in the area around the litterbox, near his food dish. now that they are far apart, he will poop in his litterbox, scratch the litter to cover it up, and then walk across the room and scratch at his food dish and the edge of the cabinet beside it. why does he do this? is it just a habit that he developed when he had the litterbox near his food? i'd think that he was spreading his scent to his food dish, but the food and litterbox are on a tile floor that wouldnt absorb scent anyway. whats going on? i'm sure its not an issue, but it strikes me as funny. thanks!

It is just natural instinct brought out by his wild ancestors and something ingrained in most cats- a throwback to when they had to bury their food to survive.

Just so you know, putting the food bowl and water dish near a litter box can really cause problems, make a cat sick or lead him to stop eating all together.
