Stinky Poop Normal?
Stinky Poop Normal?
We just got a new kitten (actually, we rescued her) and her poop stinks really bad. I mean, this is some potent stuff. Even when you are holding her, if her backside gets near your face you can smell it, and it is strong! I just emptied her litter last night, and she has already made 3 or 4 "deposits", and it just stinks up the whole house. We've tried that "no smell" litter, but that doesn't seem to work. Is poop that stinks that badly normal?
Re: Stinky Poop Normal?
Hi Ashley. I just posted a reply to one of your earlier posts, but wanted to add something after reading this post.
No, this is probably not normal. Such a strong odor can be a sign of something wrong, please have your kitten checked by a vet. Kitty's odor may not be from her poop, but could be caused by a problem with her anal glands. Only a vet can determine what is causing the strong odor, I hope you can get Nikki in for a checkup very soon.
Good luck!!

Ashley, please keep your posts in one topic, it makes it hard to search through the forum for the same cats' problems.
If you are by chance feeding a generic brand or off-brand, store-brand food, these are deficient in quality nutrients and can cause diarrhea, upset GI tract, excess gas, etc. Try Iams kitten food.
Scooping the litterbox daily and removing the waste is the key to a clean litterbox. You should also get your kitten examined by your vet and make sure that intestinal worms are ruled out, these can cause diarrhea, gas in the GI tract, etc. Other common kitten concerns are giardia, coccidia, etc, your vet can test a stool sample to rule these out and will deworm him if necessary. Do not ever attempt to deworm kittens or cats on your own, over-the-counter products are worthless, and most of them are toxic to cats....only your vet should examine and prescribe the proper wormer.
