to at least discourage them from using the carpet area again, you could lay down kitchen foil where they are going. A lot of cats don't like the feel and sound of foil, so you can at least keep them from the area with the foil.

i have a cat who has food allergies, and one of the symptoms was vomiting. You may want to discuss this possibility with the vet. once we found the right food for her the vomiting ceased (except for the hairballs... ack!)
